  • Labor & Environmentalists Rally in Oakland For Clean Air and Safe Jobs
The news about the huge rally in Oakland yesterday, where the Teamsters joined together with more than 3,000 environmental, community and labor advocates to call for clean air and good jobs at the Port of Oakland - throuigh the implementation of a comprehensive clean trucks program, reminded me of a guy at Netroots Nation who asked me why labor and the environmentalists are not working together. Clearly he was not fully aware of what labor is doing, or alternatively, thought labor should be doing more; I don't know.

I just ran across your website. I would like to submit this for posting. By way of background, I teach history at the West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah. I belong to AFT-Kentucky and KEA-NEA. I am on the executive board of the Western Kentucky Area Council, AFL-CIO. I also write just about everything for our website:

Before I became a teacher in 1989, I was a daily newspaper columnist for almost 13 years. I freelanced for the Associated Press in Kentucky for many years, too.

           Thanks,

  • The Employee Free Choice Act: American Rights At Work

A lot of UR readers here know and understand the Employee Free Choice Act. They remember it from when it was vetoed and are rallying around it again with the One Million Strong Mobilization plan from American Rights At Work. With the advent of a lot of new friends showing up to Union Review, I thought to post a little about the Employee Free Choice Act that comes straight from American Rights at Work.

  • Transit Yard Joins Teamsters; Governor of Iowa Fights Misclassification

It was great to be in Austin for Netroots Nation. I had the chance to talk to a lot of progressive people blogging on a daily basis all over the Internet. I had the awesome opportunity to share a lot about UnionReview.com and the Teamsters; our campaigns and our victories. I came away thinking we have a lot of work to do .. .folks just don't understand labor, so it seems. But that's cool -- we will slowly educate these allies and they will eventually help us get the word out about our struggles and our victories.

Today, on Daily Kos, I posted a piece about about one victory at a bus yard and another awesome move by the Governor of Iowa; while I am not sure they'll get it right away ... it is a start.

  • Labor Issues and the Progressive Netroots
This is a piece that I posted to Daily Kos this morning. The whole gist here is that over the last few days I have met some amzing people here in Austin at Netroots Nation -- and that these folks are allied with labor and would do more on their own blogs if they had a better handle on labor and issues that we contend with day in and day out.

  • Think it's easy to form a union? Better think again

I contacted Mr. McIntosh of the Northwest Labor Press after reading his article "Think it's easy to form a union? Better think again" In my note to him I wrote that I really liked his story and that, in my opinion, it really spelled out the issues surrounding the Employee Free Choice Act. I asked him if I could cross-post his piece to Union Review and on other blogs, and the blessings were given.

My hope is that you get as much out of this piece as I did.

  • Pilots Pressured ... Save $ On Fuel, Even If It Is Unsafe!

The pilots union for US Airways said Wednesday the airline is pressuring pilots to use less fuel than they feel is safe in order to save money.

US Airways Captain James Ray, a spokesman for the US Airline Pilots Association, which represents the airline's 5,200 pilots, said eight senior pilots and the union have filed complaints with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The union also paid for a full-page ad in Wednesday's USA Today addressed to "our valued passengers." The ad accuses the airline of "a program of intimidation to pressure your captain to reduce fuel loads."
