Building Trades Move Legislative Agenda Forward

Over 3,000 delegates descended on Washington DC for the 48th Annual National Legislative Conference of the Building & Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. The atmosphere at this conference was markedly different than conferences in years past. A sea change has occurred in Washington, thanks to the joint efforts of Building Trades members across the country to elect a new worker friendly Congress last November.

Mehula: $131 Million Project Symbolizes LAUSD Turn Around

After almost ten years of delays, the construction of the $131 million Vista Hermosa High School is halfway complete and is on schedule of it September 2008 completion date. The project, formerly known as Belmont High School, has been plagued by numerous environment and seismic problems, and just plain old bad luck, that many thought would kill project entirely.

Pacific Design Center’s Red Building Breaks Ground Print E-mail

$195.5 Million Project Will Be Built All Union

The ceremonial ground breaking on the Pacific Design Center’s Red Building took place on Mar 29 along with a celebration the included elected officials and celebrities. The $195.5 million dollar construction project will be built with union labor and provide an estimated 1,357 full year union construction jobs, or over 2.71 million man-hours of construction work for union trades men and women and contractors. Construction is set to begin this summer and the building is schedule to be open in 2009.

LA City Council Unanimously Approves $2 Billion Grand Ave. Project Print E-mail

Project Will Dramatically Alter Los Angeles Skyline

The revitalization of downtown Los Angeles took a dramatic step forward in February after the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved the Grand Avenue project. The project was supported by business leaders, including billionaire Eli Broad and Building Trades Unions.

Plans for the $2 billion project include a five-star hotel, 16-acre park and retail and restaurant space and 2,000 units of housing, with 20 percent of these designated “affordable” and subsidized for those who can’t pay market rates.

Building Trades United in Fight Against Carpenters Union Raiding Print E-mail

Building Trades crafts are uniting to fight efforts by the Carpenters Union to take over the work and raid the membership of other unions. Since disaffiliating from the National Building Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, the Carpenters have embarked on an aggressive campaign that has targeted a number of different crafts including the Plasterers and the Painters and Allied Trades (Drywall Finishers).

The Carpenters who supported both George Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger, have been used their political clout with the anti-union politicians in Sacramento in order to get the California Apprenticeship Commission to approve state funding and certification for a Carpenters Union apprenticeship program to train Plasterers.

Court of Appeals Upholds Wage Order 16 Print E-mail

Ruling Restores Wage Protections

In a major victory for Building Trades workers, the Fourth District Court of Appeal issued a decision in February reversing a trial court in Orange County that held Wage Order-16 was “invalid”. The court’s ruling in Small v. Brinderson Constructors, Inc. restores wage protections for construction workers, including the 8 hour work day.

California wage and hour law is governed by the Labor Code and a series of 15 industrial and occupational regulations known as Wage Orders that are promulgated by the Industrial Welfare Commission of California (IWC). These Wage Orders establish the minimum standards regulating wages, hours and working conditions for all covered employees in this state.
