Richard Six knew something was wrong as soon as the door to the break trailer at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery flew open. Local 92 (Los Angeles) Boilermakers on the Nooter outage crew spilled out of the trailer in a mad rush.

LA Live’s Nokia Theater to Open Mid-October Print E-mail

Union crews have been hard at work for nearly two years constructing the new state-of-the-art Nokia Theater at LA Live which is scheduled to open in mid-October.

The 7,100 seat, 260,000-square-feet $100 million project is part of the larger $1.7 billion LA Live development that will cover 28 acres around Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Minneapolis Bridge Collapse Puts Spotlight on Ailing California Infrastructure Print E-mail

The August 1 collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis has resulted in nation-wide reviews of bridge and overpass safety. In California, Caltrans, the public entity most responsible for such oversight in this state, conducted emergency structural inspections of 69 bridges and overpasses utilizing 75 inspectors.

Craft Unions Fight for New Power Plant Print E-mail

$450 Million, 914-Megawatt Plant Would be So Cal’s Most Efficient

Craft unions are fighting for the construction of a new 13.7-acre, $450 million power plant in the City of Vernon. If approved the 914-megawatt plant could begin operating at the corner of Fruitland and Boyle avenues by the summer of 2009. The LA/OC Building Trades Council is negotiating with the City for a Project Labor Agreement that includes the maintenance work for the life of the plant. The project would create 266 jobs for two years for the crafts who will be building the facility. Approximately $85 million has been estimated for labor costs to construct the power plant. Representatives from UA 250, IBEW 11, Ironworkers 433, and Laborers 300 have been fixtures at local hearings.
