Orange County Expanded 1-5 to Welcome Commuters Print E-mail

Orange County officials, looking forward to completion of freeway widening and other improvements to Interstate 5, voted to construct a sign welcoming commuters as they drive in from Los Angeles County. The ongoing $314 million freeway construction upgrade project which is improving the final two miles of I-5 at the LA County gateway, is adding two lanes in each direction, one of which will be a carpool lane.

New Law Targets Cheating Roofing Contractors Print E-mail

The State of California is cracking down on roofing contractors who have been cheating workers’ compensation insurance. Under new legislation, Assembly Bill 881, roofing contractors will now be forced to carry workers’ comp insurance, even if they claim they don’t have any employees.

It was standing room only at the IBEW Training Center in December as Local 11, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), and leading manufactures came together to train 400 IBEW members in the installation of solar power modules.

Lawmakers are applauding the cost saving design-build method used on the recently completed Garden Grove (22) Freeway widening project. State officials see this as a model for future construction projects.

While tax payers and political leaders celebrated the efficiency of the construction process, commuters who have had to navigate closed connectors and ramps for the past two years will be happy about a reduced commuting time.

The improvements will save commuters an average of 12 minutes in one direction.

1992 Bond Project Projected to be completed one year early

01_12_06.jpgIn 2002, Los Angeles voters passed Proposition Q, a $600 million Public Safety Bond Program, to fund the upgrade, expansion, and construction of six police stations, fire and bomb-squad facilities, a detention center and a downtown L.A. emergency operations fire/dispatch center.

At the time, opponents of the proposition argued that the city wouldn’t fulfill its part of the bargain, and that it would take years to see any progress on construction. However Prop. Q program manager Sam Tanaka is happy to prove the nay sayers wrong. According to Tanaka, the projects are not only within budget (in spite of the rising costs of construction materials), but also ahead of schedule. Best of all, he says, they will all be completed in 2008, one year early.

In a speech before business leaders and members of the Los Angeles and Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council on Nov. 30, newly Long Beach elected mayor Bob Foster outlined the agenda for his city.

Foster was endorsed by the LA/OC BCTC and was a Floorcoverer with the Painter’s and Allied Trades in Northern California. He is no stranger to business either. He was the former President of Southern California Edison, a company he worked for since 1984.
