Fifteen minutes before 5 pm, the apprentices begin trickling into the Elevator Constructor’s training center in Pasadena. After putting in a full day on the job and still wearing their Schindler and Otis work shirts, the apprentices settle in for a full evening of class instruction.

Ironworkers Local 433 placed the giant art deco-style, lattice dome high atop a new five-story, 91,334 sq-ft office building developed by Transpacific Development Company that is being constructed at the Cerritos Towne Center. The Dome’s intricate design will be a landmark for the City of Cerritos, said Art Truex, General Forman on the project for Eagle Iron. “When you drive down the 91 Freeway, you will know you are in Cerritos because of that dome,” he said.

UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprenticeship Program
The United Association is committed to provide the highest quality training for their apprentices and journeymen. The UA has nine training facilities in Southern California with a combined capital investment of approximately $100 million in facilities and equipment. The budget of $4.5 million for just their plumbing and pipefitting programs underscores the UA commitment to producing highly skilled and well-trained craftsmen and women. Building Trades News visited one of the UA's training centers in Gardena and interviewed apprentices from UA Local 250 and Plumbers Local 78.
