IBEW Local 11 Hundreds of Labor, Community, Environmental activists attended the kickoff event for the L.A. Chapter of the Apollo Alliance. This dynamic new group will push for more good union jobs for L.A. residents. This will be achieved by making cleaner, greener and environmentally friendly buildings in Los Angeles. The first policy initiative is for the City of Los Angeles to retrofit 100 city-owned buildings to make them greener. This will be done by using a combination of renewable energy sources, solar panels, more efficient plumbing and landscape design. The major push of the Alliance is a program for sustainable energy independence and would create three million good jobs, free the nation from imported oil and promote a healthier environment. There are 23 individual unions that are endorsers of the Alliance. They include the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA), Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) and the United Steelworkers of America. Also endorsing the Alliance are AFL-CIO Industrial Union Council, and the Building and Construction Trades Heavy and Highway Alliance. At the regional level, the Apollo project has been endorsed by 25 state and municipal Labor Councils. In addition, leading environmental advocacy organizations including the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation, among others, have supported the Apollo Alliance, along with major civil rights organizations, urban, farm, faith and business groups. Members can look forward to the work picture to really pick up in the next year. The Tom Bradley Terminal, L.A. Live, Kaiser Hospital Downey, Ambassador Hotel/High School, the Belmont High School, the new Parker Center and several high rise projects will all be breaking over the next 6-12 months. These projects represent several billion dollars of construction work that will be breaking soon. With all the work coming up, some of you may be interested in becoming union contractors. We are proud to announce that we will have a New Contractor class at the ETI in Commerce. The classes will focus on finance, bonding, and estimating. Past attendees were very impressed with the class. Local 48 in Portland has had several graduates who are now in business. For more information please call Tom Martinez at (626) 243-9700 Ext 738. Local 11 will be one of the most active unions in the fight to un-elect Bush clone Arnold Schwarzenegger. We will be looking for members to bring flyers to jobsites and to talk to your neighbors about the terrible policies of the Bush/Arnold/Wilson administration. To be involved call Kevin Norton @ (562) 824-5402. Join your brothers and sisters this labor day as we honor ourselves, America’s workers at the Labor Day Parade and BBQ. Bring your family and a good appetite for BBQ, fun and fraternity. We always have a good turnout of Local 11 members and their families. The Parade is in the harbor neighborhood of Wilmington (Los Angeles) on Monday September 4th, 10AM at Banning Park in Wilmington. Directions from the 110 Freeway south, exit Pacific Coast Highway take a left (east) drive 1 mile to Banning Park. (Banning/ Eubank) Finally, the amount of work is increasing quite a bit. That means, it’s time to tell your friends who are still working as a non-union electrician we have a job for them. Call (626)243-9793 to talk to an organizer. |
