Local 11 members and staff have been very busy lately. We have been picketing a jobsite in San Pedro mornings, phone banking weeknights, and walked door to door in Long Beach.
We are also attending City Council meetings in Inglewood to help the 450 million dollar Imperial Partners project get built. It’s all in a days work for Local 11 activists who are ‘raising the bar’ for Building Trades unions who want to take it to the next level of activity.

The City of Long Beach saw a level of political activity that is unprecedented in its history. Local 11 and our brothers and sisters in the Ironworkers, Painters, Pipe Fitters, Hotel Workers, CWA, and Service Employees turned out over 600 volunteers in just over 3 weeks to walk door to door and phone bank for a group of labor endorsed candidates.

Quoted in the local newspaper, one targeted candidate described the election. “It’s definitely an attempt by Los Angeles unions to take over power in this city,” Lerch said. (Val Lerch LB Press Telegram 04/13/2006) We had an unprecedented 7 candidates that were union members.

Of this group 6 won outright, or are in a runoff and 3 are waiting for results that are too close to call. The labor movement has ‘raised the bar’ in Long Beach.
