Large Construction Projects, City Elections the Focus this Spring and Summer. With Project Labor Agreements on jobs totaling more than $23 billion, we have more work under contract than union contractors to bid on them. Among the projects is the $17 billion LAUSD construction program, the $3 billion LA Community College District, LA Live, Millers Children’s Hospital at Long Beach Memorial, City of San Fernando Public Works, and the cities of Carson and Compton. Most active contractors have as much work as they can comfortably handle. Because of this, Local 11 is working on a “Small Contractor Boot Camp” for small union shops and members who are interested in starting shops. The “Boot Camp” will focus on the public works bidding process, bonding, and other issues when bidding on LACCD work. The district offers excellent programs for new/emerging shops and we want more members to start their own union shops. Time and location will be announced soon. We are looking forward to working on the election of a new Mayor, City Council and School Board in Long Beach. Our members and the contractors that employ them have been frozen out of too many major projects in Long Beach. We must make politicians accountable for continually siding with out-of-state contractors in our community. Members are encouraged to take advantage of the excellent classes available at the Electrical Training Trust. License Preparation classes offered at several convenient times and locations. Other classes offered include Motor Controls QSP, Lead Safety, Conduit Bending, and many more. Call (626) 221-5881 for information on class schedules and registration. Remember, we have to plan for tomorrow’s jobs today. Keep fighting and keep winning in ‘06. |
