Plasterers’ Local #200 and the Southern California Plastering Institute J.A.C were proud to host the eleventh annual Old-Timers’ luncheon and Apprentice Graduation last October 15, 2006.

The luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to bring together retired plasterers’ and their younger counterparts.

A time when graduating apprentices can swap stories and compare differences with the plasterer masters who have gone before.  Brother and Business Agent Russ Nicholson took the podium and spoke to the younger Apprentices about how our pension was started, how the sacrifices by our older members lead to the 1958 six week strike that gave the plasterers’ a 10 cent contribution to start the pension fund enjoyed by our retirees today and a 10 cent contribution to start up the current health and welfare fund.

Apprentices applauded for Journeymen and retirees who received awards for their 25, 30 and 50 years of continuous service to the local.  The most applause was given to our 26 members who achieved 60 years of continuous service to the local.

Our old-timers turned their attention to our graduating apprentices who were presented with their certificates and welcomed as Journeymen ready to work on scaffolds shoulder to shoulder with other journeymen, just as we have all done for over one hundred years.

Graduating Apprentice, Brother Carlos Barraza, received a gold watch for perfect attendance and a crystal trophy for the “Apprentice of the Year” award in which he received a well-deserved standing ovation from his peers and scaffold mates.
