Craft members who work in high places often wear full-body harnesses to help prevent injurious or fatal falls. Trouble is, once a fall victim hangs from the typical harness for even a few seconds, its straps cause considerable discomfort or pain in the legs and the groin.
Worse, prolonged suspension disrupts blood circulation and can cause severe injuries as the brain, kidneys, and other organs are deprived of oxygen. The new AOSafety Safe-Waze Rescue Step tackles the problem head on.
Weighing less than a quarter-pound, it’s a 70-inch-long polyester web that folds up and attaches at the harness’s D-ring. Fall victims pull a tab to deploy the Rescue Step, and then stand on one of its stirrups for support until they’re rescued.
De Walt Mobilelock GPS
Two years ago, De Walt introduced the Sitelock portable wireless alarm system, which consists of a base unit that’s typically installed in a jobsite trailer and four types of wireless sensors that can monitor assets and areas onsite.
If an intruder tries to enter a secured area, disturb a piece of protected equipment, or remove a sensor, the base unit sets off an alarm and (for a monthly fee) calls a monitoring service, which then contacts you or the authorities.
DeWalt’s new wireless Mobilelock GPS locator with anti-theft alarm can attach to a mobile asset such as a backhoe or a trailer so you can locate the equipment 24/7 through Microsoft Virtual Earth mapping on the Mobilelock Web site. The unit also contacts up to three people if its alarm is tripped. According to the brochure, 95 percent of contractors get ripped off at least once a year,with more than $1 billion in tools and equipment lost.
