UCI Medical Center Expansion Taking Shape

IBEW Local 441 electricians are currently working on a major hospital expansion at the University of California, Irvine’s Orange campus, located at the City Drive and Chapman Avenue.

The UCI Medical Center project will cost about $370 million and is slated for completion in early 2009. This new, world-class academic medical facility will replace the existing main hospital building, which was built in 1960. With 7 stories encompassing 480,000 square feet, it will house 191 patient rooms, with space for future expansion of up to 377 patient rooms. The only university hospital in Orange County, the new UCI Medical Center promises to become one of the finest academic medical centers in the country.

Sasco Electric is installing the electrical infrastructure and has already placed over 8 miles of underground conduit and 3-1500kW @12kV generator sets in the central energy yard. At completion, the Sasco team will have utilized over 150,000 IBEW man-hours, and installed1.5 million feet of branch wiring. Project Manager Jon Griffis and Superintendents Perry Cook and Randy Durham head up the onsite crew.

Masters Electric is installing the Building Automation System controls for 650 constant volume boxes, 16 air handlers, 19 isolation rooms, and 8 operating rooms. The BAS system will integrate to the Central Plant utilizing BACnet open protocol. Under the direction of Mike Bloomer and Foreman Manual Paz, over 6,000 man-hours of IBEW labor will connect more than 1,000 points of control.

Electrical Systems, Inc. is installing the medical gas control panels and all interconnect wiring. Operations Manager Rick Christensen and his crew are diligently at work, utilizing over 1,200 man-hours of IBEW labor installing this critical system.

We are proud to be part of a project that will be of such tremendous value to the community. This state-of-the-art expansion will continue to provide jobs for our members and other crafts through early 2009, and upon completion, will become a major Orange County landmark.
