Transportation Bond Doomed This Year Print E-mail
Senate President Pro-Tem Don Perata said that he would not move ahead with his proposed $7.7 billion transportation bond this year due to the time constraints. Perata had said that the bond was a top priority for the current legislative session, which ended in September.

The bond, which was intended to go before voters on the June 2006 ballot, was originally put forward as a means to pay for the retrofitting of the eastern span of the Bay Bridge, along with port and levee projects across California.

Even though the legislature will not vote on it this year, it still could be placed on the June 2006 ballot if legislators are able to work out a deal early next year. Financing for the Bay Bridge has already been resolved, so future versions of the bond issue will have to be amended.
