A s part of an unprecedented capital construction campaign, the LA Unified School District kicked off the 2005-2006 school year by opening up 13 new schools. The District plans to open another 19 new schools this year as part of a $14 billion, 10-year bond program. Previously, the LAUSD had opened 23 new schools since 2001.
“Never in the history of the United States has one district opened 13 schools in one day,” said LAUSD Superintendent Roy Romer. On the ballot in Los Angeles County is Measure Y, a $3.9 billion bond issue to help complete the ambitious building campaign and return every school in the Los Angeles Unified School District to the traditional two-semester system by the end of the year. Many schools run on a year-round calendar and it is one of the goals of the construction program to return all of the District’s schools to a two semester system. Upon completion, the 10-year program will result in 6,193 new classrooms at a cost of $8,305,940,032. |
