Summer is finally here and we expect the work picture to be busy well into winter. The first of several major refinery projects should be under way by the time you read this. By working with the Pipe Fitters and other Building Trades we expect to get more of these jobs back under the union banner. There is a major push for Local 11 members to take some new classes geared to this refinery/ industrial work. These classes will be offered at the ETI. (We also are paying for members to get a Refinery Safety Orientation (RSO) card.) It is critical that we perform as professionals on these projects. We have not been in some of these facilities in years and need to show them how why Union Electricians are the best. The work picture is looking to be robust for the next several years. That means it is time to talk to your friends that are non-union electricians about joining Local 11. We need every good electrician working in our trade to be a part of our union. Have them call our organizing office at (626) 243-9793. There is also a wealth of information on our Organizing Department website www.JoinLocal11.org. The ETI will also be looking for applicants for our all of our apprenticeship programs. There looks to be the need for several hundred apprentices this summer, Traffic Signal apprentices are high demand already. Local 11 members worked our butts off during the last election cycle. Long Beach has been a place where anti-union forces have long dominated. Working with an alliance of labor and community groups we have changed the political dynamics of the city. Labor will no longer be overlooked in the second largest city in L.A. County and our voice will be heard. As expected, many came out and phone banked, walked door to door, and talked to their neighbors about the importance of electing friends of working families. We wish all of our endorsed candidates’ good luck. With the primary over we now look forward to un-electing the Governator in November. Keep Fighting and Keep Winning in ‘06. |
