Local Credits Teamwork, Professionalism for Successes

In September 2006, Orange County will usher in a new era for arts and culture as the Pacific Symphony moves into the new Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall which is an expansion of the Orange County Performing Arts Center. This elegant 2,000 seat concert hall designed by acoustician Russell Johnson, built by the Fluor Corporation and personal detail provided by Plasterers Local 200 will be yet another notable cultural achievement for the Orange County area.

No matter what your occupation is as a construction worker in today’s environment of architectural wonders, known as nightmares from the workers standpoint, it is always an honor to be able to stand back and look at a challenging project when it’s completed and brag to your family and friends about how you built it (all by yourself). What’s also inspirational is when the product you help achieve with unselfish teamwork is recognized by owners, architects and general contractors as something that has the value and professionalism once considered extinct in this new age of high pressure competition.

Members of Local 200 have set a goal to recapture the prestige of the plastering industry by putting our money where our mouth is. Here we have a project that has given us a chance to shine as a Union in a cut-throat industry that has no conscience and takes no prisoners. I would hope that we can continue to savor these accomplishments and produce a steady stream of high quality plaster projects that will put Local 200 back on the map. One might ask, “What can I do to be a part of these types of projects?” It’s pretty simple. You personally have to make yourself a desirable asset much like an athlete in the sports industry. The better you are as a team player and never being too proud to improve your mechanical or individual skills will get you on the rosters of the companies that take on these jobs that have no tolerance for poor workmanship. FMI (Frederick Meiswinkle, Inc) has taken a chance by coming into the southern California area not even knowing if they could get capable mechanics to perform this type of intricate work. To their surprise Local 200 was able to supply them with what has been a blessing and a relief to what could have been a potential disappointment.

Our goal here at Local 200 is to be able to provide all of our contractors with these types of crews. If everyone does their individual assignment and maintains a solid work ethic then we will always be on top of the most wanted workers list.
