We were honored to host the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor ‘Martin Luther King Labor Breakfast’ and sponsor the Kingdom Day Parade this January. A virtual who’s who of elected officials, labor leaders, clergy, and union activists were among nearly 700 attendees at the ETI this month to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.

One of the exciting new developments highlighted at the breakfast was The Los Angeles City Community Construction Initiative.

The Building Trades, Mayor Villarraigosa, and clergy designed the initiative to show city residents all of the opportunities that union jobs in construction can provide. Business Manager Marvin Kropke has been a strong supporter of the initiative and Eric Brown, Jane Templin, and Larry Caldwell are all involved in the process as well.

The Kingdom Day Parade is an annual event that began in South Los Angeles in 1985. Annual attendance is estimated to be nearly 140,000 visitors every year and is also shown on NBC Channel 4 during a live broadcast. The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor became the sponsor several years ago and had a television commercial running during the broadcast that featured Local 11’s own Bob Styles.

The past month has been a frenzy of activity for Organizers in local 11. There were 10 new IBEW Local 11 contractors signing up in the first month of this year. The shops bring with them about 200 new members. They represent many different areas of our industry including retail work, low voltage, school work, custom home/residential, solar, and small commercial.

Some of the companies are Southwest Tenant Development, Power Electric, Coleman Electric, Nationwide Electric, Integrated Computer, Pro Electrical Solutions, Duo Electric and Accurate Electric Services. We look forward to working with these contractors and we hope that their IBEW affiliation is a prosperous one.
