Striking Differences Between Pro-Worker Angelides and Arnold, the Union Buster

Union members have a choice on November 7. According to Building Trades leaders, we can chose to re-elect a governor who tried to silence the voice of Labor Unions in politics, who attacked our pensions, attacked prevailing wages  and workers compensation, attacked our pension programs, tried to eliminate our overtime pay and lunch breaks and took millions of dollars in corporate contributions to fund his attacks or working people.

Or we can elect Phil Angelides, who fought alongside working people and their families against the governor’s assault. Critics of the governor say that since the 2005 special election, he has been misrepresenting himself and now he is misrepresenting his opponent, Phil Angelides, in order to get re-elected.

Six months ago, Schwarzenegger was one the most hated politicians in the state. He suffered a humiliating defeat in last year’s special election because of the efforts of the labor movement in Southern California who mobilized to fight the governor’s anti-worker agenda.

Since then, Schwarzenegger has moved to the center in a bid to make himself more electable. He passed environmental legislation and posed for several photo opportunities with some of the state’s most prominent Democratic leaders including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez.
The tactic seems to be working, at least for now. Support for the governor has grown and, according to some polls, he is even leading Angelides among Building Trades Members, despite Schwarzenegger’s repeated attacks on their interests.

“You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” said Kevin Norton, Political Director of IBEW Local 11. “Schwarzenegger is bad on all of our issues--prevailing wages, workers compensation, overtime, and Apprenticeship programs. It is inconceivable to me that any construction worker would support giving this governor four more years to attack us and our families.

In these last few weeks of the campaign, it is important that we are talking to our brothers and sisters on the job site and let them know what is at stake this November.”

State Senator Shelia Kuehl is not fooled by the governor’s make-over. “I believe he is very carefully threading his way through a great many issues, attempting to hold onto a conservative Republican base while also attempting to appear moderate enough on social and environmental issues that he can gain traction in the middle,” says Kuehl who remains a steadfast critic of the governor. “And it’s so calculated that it’s somewhat discouraging to see that it’s working, according to the polls.”

During their only debate, Schwarzenegger did his best to portray Angelides as “tax raising” liberal, a charge that political analysts say is misleading. The Bush-Schwarzenegger agenda has been to shift the tax burden onto the lower and middle class by cutting taxes on corporations and the extremely wealthy.

According to the Angelides campaign, the result of the Bush-Schwarzenegger tax policy has been that people who actually work for a living bear an unfair share of the tax burden.

Phil Angelides’ tax policy would actually lower, not raise, the tax burden on the middle class. He wants to see the extremely privileged and corporate America finally pay their fair share of taxes to rebuild the infrastructure of our state, and fund much needed public works construction. Unless you a multi-millionaire, Phil Angelides won’t be raising your tax bill.

The LA/Orange County Building Trades is urging you to get out the vote this November 7. “The last few weeks of this election will be a crucial opportunity to educate our fellow Union members and their households about what is truly at stake this election,” said Richard Slawson head of the LA/OC Building Trades Council.

“You can help us by getting out the word on the job site by phone banking, precinct walking, and talking to your family and neighbors. Don’t be fooled by Schwarzenegger’s friendly act. If he is elected this November, the Terminator will be back to say ‘Hasta la vista’ to prevailing wages, pensions, and apprenticeship programs.”
