Victory for Working Families: House Passes Employee Free Choice Act Print E-mail
By a vote of margin of 241–185, the House of Representatives passed the Employee Free Choice Act, one of the most important pieces of labor legislation in over 70 years. The bill protects workers who are trying to organize unions from illegal firings. Union activists say the right of workers to organize in unions is widely recognized in most democracies around the world. But they say when workers in the United States try to organize; they often face aggressive campaigning by employers to prevent the formation of a union. Stewart Acuff, organizing director of the AFL-CIO, said that thousands of workers are fired each year for trying to form a union.

“Workers trying to organize Unions often face intimidation and harassment by unscrupulous business owners. This legislation is an important step to hold those who violate the rights of workers accountable and to protect the right of workers to be union,” said Robert Smith, Political Director of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 36.
